About Tarpon
Tarpon can reach a size of up to 8 feet, weighing up to 280 lbs. They can live 50 plus years. Due to its size and color, it is nicknamed the “silver king.”
They are strictly carnivorous and feed on mullets, pinfish, sardines, shrimp, and crabs. Tarpon feed both during the day and at night.
The best time of day to catch them is early morning and late afternoon in the spring, summer, and early fall months. Tarpon will also bite at night on live bait or fresh dead bait. Lures are usually not successful at night.
The largest tarpon ever caught was recorded at 286 pounds, 9 ounces in March 2003.
Best Tarpon Fishing Spots in the U.S.
- Islamorada & Marathon in the Florida Keys.
- St. Augustine, Florida.
- Boca Grande, Florida. Located at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor near Fort Myers.
When you have one on the line, they are fighting hard to get free which attracts sharks like Bull Sharks & Hammerheads. It can be very exciting watching a 14′ Hammerhead chasing a tarpon alongside the boat. Most often, you will bring in just the head of the tarpon, because the shark usually wins that fight.
