The shallower edge of the reef out to 150 feet has been fairly productive with Sailfish, Kings, Wahoo, and some really nice sized Blackfin Tunas and Bonita. We have put a hurting on these guys this week with the Kites being our best tactic. Cigar Minnows, Pilchards, and Sardines have been the bait of choice this week for these guys on the kites. The bottom fishing has been productive as well while just deploying a bottom rod while the kites are out and on the sea anchor. I find some of my most productive bottom while Sailfishing, so don’t forget to keep an eye on your depth sounder while you are drifting around. You would be absolutely amazed at what you can find while fishing this way.
The reef has been pretty good this week with some nice catches of Yellowtail Snapper, Cero Mackerel, and Mutton Snapper. The current has been just enough this week to get the job done and the Snappers have been pretty happy in the slick. It has been a mix of all sizes, but once you chum long enough the smaller fish seem to be filling up rather quickly, then the nicer fish get a chance to get their place in the fish box! It has definitely been a “dinner and a show” kind of week as we have been spending a good amount of time with the kites out for Sails, but have been making an hour or two on the reef to fill the box with some great eating fish. Makes for some great dinnertime stories I am sure!
